Pitched battles in Lyari after killing of gangster

 

The law and order situation remained disturbed in several areas of the city on Sunday following the killing of a “gangster” in Lyari in an early morning encounter, triggering pitched battles between the protesters and police, and spreading violence to various Baloch-dominated localities.   Several people, including activists of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and Awami National Party (ANP) were injured, while a labourer was shot dead in the Sohrab Goth area in the incidents of violence that continued till late night.   Earlier, in the day, the City Town police raided the Chakiwara area in Lyari during which they claimed to have killed a known gangster Saqib alias Sakhi in an encounter. An ASI was also injured during the shootout.   According to SSP Mohammed Aslam Khan of CID Sindh, who was supervising the operation in Lyari, acting on a tip off they raided a place in Chakiwara No-II. Upon seeing the police the gangsters opened fire and an encounter ensued during which Saqib alias Sakhi of the Lyari gang war group and ASI Waheed sustained injuries. However, Saqib’s accomplices Umer katchi, Baba Ladla, Abdul Jabbar alias Jeango, Taj Mohammed alias Taju and others fled, taking advantage of narrow lanes. The police recovered one Kalashnikov and a 9mm pistol from the possession of Saqib.   The injured “gangster” and the cop were moved to the Civil Hospital where Saqib expired during treatment.SP Khan said that Saqib was a close aide of Uzair Baloch and both were earlier arrested by the police. Saqib was presently on bail and resumed his criminal activities.   Saqib was wanted by the police in a number of cases including murder, extortion, attempt to murder and kidnapping for ransom. A case has been registered and raids were underway for the arrest of criminals, he added.   Meanwhile, the residents of Lyari protested against the search operation by the City Town police and also gathered at the Chakiwara police station, demanding immediate halt to the operation against the Lyari people. However, the protesters dispersed peacefully on the assurance of some senior officials.   Later in the evening, violence again erupted in Lyari where armed gangsters took charge of the area and resorted to aerial firing, forcing the traders to shut their shops. Consequently, the law enforcement agencies personnel entered the disturbed localities in Baghdadi and Chakiwara and pitched battles started between the police and the protestors.   Police alleged that during the encounter armed men threw petrol bombs on the armoured personnel carrier (APC) but nobody was hit in the attack. The violence later engulfed other parts of the city including Machcher Colony, Essa Nagri, PIB Colony, Liaquatabad, Illyas Goth, Teen Hati, Hassan Square and Golimar Chowrangi.   Two passersby identified as Saeedullah and Zaibullah sustained bullet injuries near Crown Cinema. They were shifted to Civil Hospital Karachi (CHK) for treatment. Armed gangsters also attacked two shops in Chakiwara area and torched pushcarts.   Armed men opened fire on the passersby in Machcher Colony due to which Asif Amjad and Arif sustained injuries. They were also taken to CHK.   Similarly, armed men took to the streets in Illyas Goth, Liaquatabad, and got the shops closed at gun point. Some residents of Teen Hati also took to the streets in protest and torched tyres due to which a severe traffic gridlock was witnessed from Liaqutabad to Teen Hati, as the motorists stuck up on the main roads and law enforcers failed to control the situation.   Firing incidents were also reported from Essa Nagri and Askeri Park where two people identified as Nazar Mukaram and Mujtaba sustained injuries. They were shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital (ASH).   Nazar Mukaram is a resident of Korangi and also a sector member of the MQM from the area. He was heading to attend a Mushaira organized by the MQM on Sunday night when he was targeted near Essa Nagri stop.   He received a single bullet near his ear but his condition was said to stable. In the meantime, police received information that some armed men had attacked the vehicle of MQM’s MPA Nadia Gabol in Lyari.   Police said that Ms Nadia Gabol was going to her Gabol House residence in the Chakiwara area with her mother when the miscreants attacked her vehicle with stones, however, both of them remained safe as police took timely action and shifted them safely to their residence.In Sohrab Goth, unidentified men killed Shakirullah Mehsud (32) in Ali Town near Al-Asif Square late in the night.   The deceased was a labourer by profession and was heading to his house when he was shot dead. Mehsud received multiple bullet wounds on his body.   Unidentified armed men attacked two activists of Awami National Party (ANP) on the main road of Gulshan-i-Sikanderabad in Jackson police limits.Asghar Khan and Fazl-e-Haq, aging mid-thirties, were heading to their house in the area when their vehicle was fired upon, causing injuries to both of them.   They were shifted to Ziauddin Hospital, Clifton, where their condition was said to be critical.They are said to be the activists of ANP.In Gulshan-i-Iqbal, a passerby was shot at and injured near Gulshan Chowrangi.   Miscreants resorted to aerial firing in Bangoria Goth in Azizabad police limits and forced the traders to pull down shutters.Meanwhile, two political parties clashed in Sachal area late Sunday night and the situation in the said areas remained tense till the filing of this report.   In another case, an unidentified woman was shot dead outside a burger shop near Light House in the Arambagh police limits.During investigation it was found that the woman was standing near the shop when two armed men on a motorcycle came and opened fire on the bugger shop but the bullets hit the lady, who died on the spot.
